About Us

Pilgrim Park Apartments was established in 1971 from the happy confluence of:

  • The First Congregational Church had excess land
  • The congregation wanted to do something helpful for the community with the land
  • The Federal Government was then sponsoring low-interest loans for affordable housing

The church, under the leadership of John Starkweather, planned and managed the creation of Pilgrim Park Apartments, Inc. a 501 ©(3) Not-for-profit corporation. Seven directors from the congregation have management and policy responsibilities for Pilgrim Park. The directors have delegated management of Pilgrim Park to The John Stewart Company of San Francisco.

Pilgrim Park is situated in the Terra Linda Valley west of the Marin Civic Center, close to the bus lines and a few blocks from two neighborhood grocery stores and several restaurants. Downtown San Rafael, a major shopping center, elementary and high schools, and five churches are all located within one-mile radius of Pilgrim Park. A number of the 2nd and 3rd Story apartments have a view of the surrounding foothills.

Amenities:

COMMON AREAS: Seventeen 2 and 3 story wood and stucco buildings are arranged on two levels of a 3-acre site divided by a drainage creek and wooden bridge. The grounds are unusually attractive, with numerous trees; terraced planting beds behind Sonoma Stone walls a community garden, and a variety of outdoor leisure areas. These include an arbor and chess table, lawns and a terrace enclosed with stone and redwood wall seats and planter. Benches and tables are varnished in redwood.

RECREATION AND PLAY FACILITIES: A large sandbox and modern play structure designed for children ages 4-13, also a 40-foot slide leading from an upper garden area to the sandbox below. Pilgrim Park offers a variety of community programs for our residents, primarily through the use of grant funds when available.

61 APARTMENTS: Each apartment has a ground floor patio or a balcony deck, good quality carpets, energy efficient windows, Window blinds, gas ranges, frost free refrigerators, garbage disposals, wardrobe and linen closets, storage locker in the carports, doorbell and viewers to entry doors. Assessable units available.
